Diverse practices of hydrogen-powered ships

2026-04-27

Hydrogen powered ships, with their advantages of zero emissions, low noise, and high energy efficiency, have been applied in four major scenarios: inland waterway transportation, coastal passenger transportation, special ships, and ocean going ships, forming a development pattern of "inland waterway first, coastal breakthrough, special popularization, and ocean exploration".

1、 Inland waterway transportation: the main force of short distance freight and government ships

Inland waterway transportation has short mileage, fixed routes, and convenient refueling, making it the preferred scenario for the commercialization of hydrogen energy ships. The Yangtze River Basin, as a core demonstration zone, has formed a complete application system for hydrogen powered ships in inland rivers. As an inland river official ship, the "Three Gorges Hydrogen Boat 1" undertakes cruising and supervision tasks in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, with a noise level of only 65dB (traditional cruise ships 85dB), greatly improving driving comfort. The 2000 ton hydrogen fuel cell cargo ship, which will start construction in 2026, is suitable for the transportation of bulk goods in the Beijiang River area, with zero carbon emissions and low operating noise, helping to promote the green upgrade of inland waterway freight transportation. In addition, the 500 ton hydrogen fuel cell cargo ship has been tested to have sailed 920 kilometers on the Wuhan Nanjing route, verifying the practicality of inland waterway freight transportation.

2、 Coastal Passenger Transport: Green Upgrade of Ferries and Tourist Boats

Coastal passenger ships have fixed routes, concentrated passengers, high environmental requirements, and strong adaptability to hydrogen fuel cell power. The world's first liquid hydrogen powered ferry "MF Hydra" has been put into operation in Norway, capable of carrying 150 passengers and 20 cars, with a range of 100 nautical miles and a refueling time of 30 minutes, comparable to diesel ships. The domestic coastal tourist ship "Hydrogen Tour No.1" adopts a hybrid of 300kW fuel cell and 200kWh lithium battery. During the trial operation in the Three Gorges Reservoir area, tourist satisfaction increased by 42%, and the maximum daily passenger capacity reached 1800. Hydrogen powered passenger ships have zero emissions and low vibration, which can significantly improve port air quality and meet the ecological and environmental protection needs of coastal cities.

3、 Special vessels: Zero carbon transformation of tugboats and engineering ships

Special vessels such as port tugboats, waterway engineering ships, and maritime law enforcement ships, with concentrated operation areas, frequent start stop operations, and large emissions, are the focus of port pollution control and an important scene for the penetration of hydrogen energy technology. In June 2025, the first hydrogen electric tugboat in China, "Hydrogen Electric Tu1", was put into service at Qingdao Port. It adopts a hybrid power of hydrogen fuel cell and lithium battery, which can achieve zero emission operation and significantly reduce port noise and exhaust pollution. In addition, hydrogen powered dredging ships and maritime patrol ships have successively completed their design and research and development, gradually replacing traditional fuel powered special vessels and assisting in the construction of green ports.

4、 Ocean going vessels: future exploration of zero carbon shipping

The long voyage, high power, and high demand for hydrogen storage of ocean going vessels are the difficulties in the application of hydrogen energy ships and the high ground of future competition. At present, ocean going hydrogen powered vessels are in the pre research and demonstration stage, with a focus on exploring liquid hydrogen storage and transportation as well as high-power fuel cell technology. The 118.8-meter zero carbon superyacht "Breakthrough" built by Feadship in the Netherlands uses a megawatt level liquid hydrogen fuel cell system, which can achieve one week of emission free berthing and 10 knots of zero carbon sailing, providing a zero carbon solution for luxury ocean going vessels. In August 2025, Norwegian shipping company placed an order for two hydrogen powered bulk carriers, marking the beginning of hydrogen energy technology's entry into the ocean going main ship market.

The application scenarios of hydrogen energy ships continue to expand from inland to offshore, from government ships to bulk carriers, and their technological maturity continues to improve. In the future, with the reduction of green hydrogen costs and the improvement of refueling networks, hydrogen powered ships will comprehensively cover all shipping scenarios, promoting the global shipping industry to enter a new era of zero carbon.
